Why live wallpapers don't have to kill your battery

Most live wallpapers earn their bad reputation honestly. They render full frames on the CPU, ignore what the machine is doing, and keep painting pixels no one can see. The battery pays for all of it.

Decode on the hardware, not the CPU

Every Apple Silicon Mac ships with a dedicated media engine. When you hand it HEVC, it decodes video at a fraction of the power a software path would draw. Nocturne never touches the CPU for decode. That single decision does most of the work.

The cheapest frame is the one you never draw.

Stop when no one is looking

A wallpaper covered by a fullscreen app is invisible. So is one on a sleeping display, or behind a locked screen, or on a laptop running from the battery. Nocturne watches for all of these and pauses instantly, then resumes at the exact frame it left.

Add it up and a moving 4K desktop costs two to three percent CPU while it plays, and nothing at all the moment it is out of view.
